Hi,

This is a production release of the OctaneRender™ 2021.1 for Houdini™ plugin compiled with the Octane 2021.1.6 core. This 2021.1.6.0 release is available for the latest Houdini production builds on Windows x64 and Linux gcc6.3.1.

Houdini production builds supported by this release: 18.0.597, 18.5.759, 19.0.622, 19.0.657, 19.0.720, 19.5.303 and 19.5.368

This build includes the first beta version of the new Qt5 IPR Window, the core of the plugin's whole new IPR system that will replace the old OpenGL IPR Window. There are still some important features missing (like camera selector, shortcuts/preferences, background image, or snapshots gallery) that will be added this year, alongside the viewport IPR rendering feature, but the core technology is ready to be tested. The new Qt5 IPR window is available for both Windows and Linux (and macOS in the future) and it can be opened as a floating window or inside a Houdini pane.

This version supports Nvidia Ampere GPUs and as a consequence, we had to drop support for old Kepler cards with a compute model < 3.5. And please make sure to use a NVIDIA Studio driver with version at least 456.38 on Windows or 455.23 on Linux

* OCTANE 2021.1.6 FEATURES AND FIXES:
- Ported back the improved rendering of hair with motion blur from 2022.1 XB1 to 2021.1.
- Ported back the improved rendering of hair segment joints from 2022.1 XB3 to 2021.1.
- Improved AI light update speed in some corner cases.
- Improved consistency of the amounts of emitter noise between render restarts in scenes with enabled AI light. We now always build the highest quality AI light data structures. This may have an impact interactivity in some corner cases. Let us know if you have a scene where the update speed is severely impacted.
- Fixed a render hang with dirt by limiting the number of surface intersections we allow for a dirt ray.
- Fixed visible seams of adjacent surfaces with different material nodes that have the same settings and also a sub-surface scattering medium.
- Various tweaks and minor fixes in the handling of nested media and dielectrics, especially when a path exits those.
- Fixed Autobump map which when RTX is enabled.
- Fixed render artifacts in custom AOVs when an environment scatter/random walk medium is being used.
- Fixed darkening of custom AOVs of a surface when you change the step length of a volume in front of the surface.
- Fixed bug that caused the full environment to be included in shadow AOVs even when portals are enabled and the environment is not importance sampled.
- Fixed laggy imaging/tone-mapping while rendering is progressing.
- Fixed noise and incorrect background of the position AOVs if RTX is disabled and the scene bounding box has size 0 along one of its axis.
- Fixed post-fx not being shown in the denoised main AOV until denoising has been done.
- OSL: Fixed assignment to short arrays where the index is not a compile time constant.
- OSL: Fixed compilation error with OSL shaders which use escape characters like "\n" and "\t" in string literals.
- OSL: In some cases we fall back to a fixed value if an OSL shader reads an undefined value

Hey Juanjo,

I'm wondering if there's a way to change the default behavior of a light turning pink when turned off from within the node's 'Light' parameter tab. Its a great feature that you can toggle this switch and see the effects in the IPR without needing to manually reload like is the case when toggling off the light node itself, however it's difficult to get a read of the light's influence (or lack of) when it's casting a color. If there isn't a way to enable this on the user end, is this something you could consider implementing in a future build?

I exported an Orbx from Houdini with this version of octane. I used ACES. In the standalone version, everything is fine, but in RNDR Token, the textures are not loaded at all. If I change the color space of the textures in Houdini from “Utility SRGB texture” to SRGB or from “Utility Raw” to RAW on RNDR Token, everything is loaded correctly, but with the wrong colors. Is this a bug? Can you help me? Thanks!

The problem can be that the RNDR tokens don't have the same ocio config that you have configured in your system. Can you please send an email about this issue to the support team? [email protected]

Hey Juanjo,

I'm noticing that MPlay takes a significant amount of time to start up for the first time if rendering is active in the Qt5 IPR window when you click the MPlay Snapshot button, even if it has completed the max samples. If you turn off rendering (toggle the play button) before attempting to create an MPlay Snapshot MPlay will start immediately. Once MPlay is running with an active connection you can take snapshots while Qt5 is rendering without any issues.

Let me know if you need any further info.

I'm trying to render a toon material and the moment I tried adding two toon lights I got an error, sometimes it even says I don't have enough memory (with a basically empty scene)

Running W10, H19.5.403 RTX3090 drivers 526.98

The problem comes from the material layer node. If you remove it the rendering seems fine. Perhaps this feature is not compatible with the toon shading, but anyway this is a core issue. I'll report it to the core devs.
