Deadline + Houdini 17 + Octane 4 problem.

Hi!

I'm having problems rendering using the combination H17 + Octane 4 plug in + Deadline on Linux.

What happens is that when I submit to deadline, I get a prompt telling me to log-in (even though I have already logged in in standalone + houdini).
After entering the log-in yet again, I get a prompt telling me the licenses are locked to the machine I'm trying to render on (using deadline as a render queue system on my only machine).
After quitting Houdini, I try to enter the info again, and it works.

Is there any way to work around this? How can a license used on the same machine not be accessible on the very same machine?

To make matters worse, after rendering over night, it tells me my license is in use and locked by the machine I'm trying to use it on, forcing me to use the unlock in the web ui to get going again.

Confused, please advise.

Hi,

So all these issues happen while rendering on the same machine, but using Deadline as render controller, right? This is something really weird in this case.

Are you sure that that you have only one Octane version installed on this system? I wonder if hython (used by Deadline to render the Houdini scenes) could be using another Octane version, not the same that you are using in Houdini. If you have several users on this system (for example one only for the Deadline process) it could be using another Octane version because each user has its own houdini.env file to configure the plugin.

You should check the log that you get from Houdini and from the Deadline console to be sure that the Octane versions are the same.

Thanks,

Hi!

Yes, it's just using deadline as a controller on the same machine.
Will check the logs and also see what output I get when rendering directly with hython..

Thanks for helping,

Hmm.. well.. it seems it picks up octane 4.
I also believe the user running the slave is my login, not deadline user.

Right after this STDOUT, the OctaneRender Authentication appears, if I do login to this prompt, my license gets locked, even though it's the same machine and I need to unlock through web ui.

Ok. Thanks for the information. I can understand that the licenses are not released after a Deadline rendering session because hython could be still running in the background, killed by Deadline without releasing the licenses, or something like that, but I can't understand why even if the license has not been released from hython/Deadline, you can't use it from Houdini in the same machine.

I need to ask to the licensing system devs about this issue because really I can't understand how it is possible. I hope to know more soon.

Thanks for your patience,

Thanks for looking into this.

Well, I get the prompt before rendering can execute in deadline.
If I do enter the information, the license becomes invalid for standalone, houdini, deadline all at once and require web unlock.

Hi Hamp,

We have noticed that Hython seems to create a sandbox in which Octane runs which makes it look as a different machine in terms of activation.

We will be in touch with SideFX and get back to you in case they provide a solution for this.

In the meantime you can get around this by closing Houdini before running Hython and vice-versa.

Apologies for the inconveniences.

Oh, ok.

Removes one big reason GPU rendering is useful : being able to have multiple cards and keep on working.
Right now I'm evaluating for production use where the artists would be in the same position as my test setup, and this would be a bit problematic.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that this can be solved.

Please let me know if you get any updated info.

Only a brief note: This is a Linux only issue, in Windows Octane doesn't have this problem while running inside hython ... not sure if this could help in your studio.

Thanks,

We have found a fix for this issue on our side so you should expect a new version likely some time next week.

Thank you for your help.
