Octane Indie render resolution limit should be 1440x1440

hi again,
I just purchased a subscription to OctaneVR in hopes that it would replace Mantra in my current workflow using Houdini Indie. It is great so far, but I am having an issue with the resolution limits for square renders.

For the last six months I have been rendering out sequences in Indie using mantra at 1440x1440 pixels, the limit that Indie allows for rendering (2,073,600 pixels in total). But I just tried to re-render an old sequence in OctaneVR for comparison, but it wouldn't let me render at 1440x1440 px, and popped a dialog box saying it was beyond what is allowed by the Indie license. This is not true, Indie allows this res as I have been rendering at it for the last half year. The restriction is 2,073,600 total rendered pixels, which in 16x9 format is 1920x1080px and in 1:1 aspect ratio it is 1440x1440px. The 1080x1080 frames that I seem to be able to render with Octane amount to only 1,166,400 pixels, or 56% of what's actually allowed.

I am hoping you guys can confirm this and increase the pixel count for square images in the next update (actually you probably need to adjust how you calculate the limits for all non 16:9 resolutions, not just 1:1) , otherwise you are shortchanging some of your customers 46% of their allowed pixel (and I will have to go back to Mantra. :cry: )

Thanks for listening.

Hi,

Sorry, but the agreement that we have signed with SideFX to allow the Octane third party rendering on Houdini Indie doesn't allow support render resolutions above 1920x1080 ... SideFX has even sent us the code that we must add to the plugin to limit the render resolution and it is fairly clear:

“The maximum resolution of any sequence of images produced by the Renderer must be 1920x1080”
(x_res <= 1920 && y_res <= 1080)

So there is nothing that legally I could make on the plugin side to render at 1440x1440 on Indie ... you should ask to SideFX about this limitation. If they send us a new agreement to let us modify the plugin code related to the Indie limitations, I'll have no problem in modifying it.

Thanks,
-Juanjo

1440x1440 is the EXACT same resolution as 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels. Resolution is resolution - I am paying for pixels, not aspect ratio.

I think it is fair to assume that SideFx's intention is to limit the resolution of render plugins to the same resolution restrictions THEY allow in Indie, which is 2,073,600 pixels. They allow rendering at 1440x1440. read - they ALLOW this.

Can you please clarifying/confirm this with them? As the render plugin vendor, this is almost certainly your responsibility not mine, as your customer.

As it stands, if someone want to render 4:3 or 1:1, or any non-standard dimension, you are short changing them pixels with the current restriction. I just rendered this 8100x256 strip in Mantra with Indie (attached), I should be able do the equivalent with OctaneVR.

I have had all my media going out at 1440x1440 FROM Indie, but can't really switch over to Octane with its current 1080x1080 limit.

SideFX has introduced these limitations in the agreement signed by all the third party renderers vendors, so to be clear: SideFX doesn't allow rendering at 1440x1440 in Indie using external renderers, something that is true, as far as I know, for all the available render plugins (Arnold, VRAY, Redshift, etc.)

It is not my fault. Without having signed this agreement with these restrictions, Octane could not work on Indie at all. And the agreement is clear: a render resolution above 1920x1080 is not allowed.

I'll ask about removing this limitation to SideFX again, but I suppose that if a lot of users ask SideFX about why they have introduced this limitation, there are going to me more chances to make it possible.

Thanks,

Am I not being clear? :shock:

1920x1080 and 1440x1440 are the SAME resolution.

RESOLUTION = xdim * ydim = 1920 * 1080 = 1440 * 1440 = 2,073,600 pixels

EXACTLY THE SAME!

This is why I am able to render my 1440^2 frames in Mantra on Indie - which has the exact same 1920x1080 resolution limit as Octane should have.

I think Juanjo is the one who's being clear. Your beef should be with SideFX, not him.
