Rendering fur in Houdini 16?

I've seen a thread about rendering fur in H15, but now that the fur system has been completely changed, how would we render fur in H16?

Hi,

I've been working on this feature in the past weeks, in fact, it should work with the current 3.06.0.0 plugin build.

The Octane plugin can render the H16 hair curves extracting the geometry from the hair generator SOP nodes. To render the Houdini 16 hair, the hair generator node must be configured to “Use SOP Geometry”. This means that the plugin is going to extract the SOP data that is computed for the viewports. Due to this workflow, some display optimizations like the “Limit to Bounding Box” option can’t be used while working with Octane. Of course, you need to add to the hair generator the Octane OBJ spare parameters and enable the fur rendering option.

If you want to hide the computed fur in the viewports, you can edit the hair generator node SOPs and set the display flag to a null or another kind of lightweight SOP.

Hope this helps,
-Juanjo

Hey Juanjo,

Have you ever thought of putting a series of simple videos showing the Houdini/Octane plugin user base some basic workflows on how to use the plugin effectively??

That would be really helpful for people new to Houdini 16. I know there seems to be a strong interest with Houdini and its capabilities. The problem I know I have is I don't know "anything". Paul K did some pretty cool tutorials with modo that I remember (wish he actually did more). You know, something that would help guide us to finish a project and provide a good structure to expand on this great plugin.

Just put yourself in our shoes and pretend you didn't know a thing about the plugin!!!!

Thank you for your efforts. I'm sure you know people appreciate you.

:)

I'm sorry. Unfortunately, I have not enough free time to work in video tutorials (and my spoken English level is also too limited for this kind of tasks). What I have to finish are all the online docs, that are only half updated with all the new 3.x features, and only with this task I am going to have a lot of work to do in the next weeks/months ;)

Thanks,
-Juanjo

Thanks Juanjo for your quick reply!

What about the management team at OTOY? Do you ever provide recommendations to the guys/gals that make the big decisions?

I always liked this video: . Something like this.

Wouldn't they want more people to use and buy their products?

I know that work in video tutorials and improve all the Octane documentation is something planned, but I don't have more details about it.

Thanks,
