Am I tripping - mesh emitters vs texture emitters

So I think I read a thread a few months ago where people were talking about mesh emitters vs texture emitters(and I paraphrase combined with it being months ago so I could be remembering wrong).

I can't find the original thread so can anyone answer?

I *think* I read that mesh emitters are significantly slower than texture emitters
OR
I read that mesh emitters AND texture emitters are both significantly slower than a scene lit by an HDR background?

Are any of the two correct or am I out to lunch?

HDR is by far faster than anything else.

But what do you mean texture emitter or mesh emitter?
Do you mean IES lights as texture emitters?

Blackbody vs texture.

When I run a test I don't see any difference between the two of them so it must have been that emitters were slow and HDR was fast.

Definitely, HDRI lighting is gobs faster than mesh emitters. I am a high-poly guy, so I DEFINITELY notice a HUGE improvement!
