LOVING Octane! Bought some GPU's...

Man-
I've got to say working with this render tool is a joy. With some mega GPU's it's like my dream of creating renders without the rendering. Getting there anyway. Super sweet tool.

So I bought a GTX 680 4GIG for it. Then I got another one. So, um, then I bought 2 more and of course a new motherboard and PSU that could power a small town. Anyway, MicroCenter has a bunch of my money and I have a KILLER Octane machine. I can't stop working with this thing. LOVE.

Thanks, that's all for now. Just wanted to share. Looking forward to contributing here!

Alec

what drivers are you using? I can not get my 680s to work. Octane launches and just never finishes loading

Thanks

Sorry to hear that. I'll check when I run back to work in the morning. So far it's flawless. Insane speed. I'll keep you posted...

Alec

PS- I do think a lot of issues from my brief knowledge of it all is power. If you give these things lots they just work better. I'm running a 1500 watt monster PSU. I think it's very important to the stability of it all.

Just got em back up and running... Got a tough power 1500W so power is good.

The problem I am having is that every time I stick in a 580 GTX I can't boot anything ... I mean the whole OS... when I take the 580s out I get a successful boot from the OS and the two 680s run fine.

Well, I'm no expert here. Still new really, but from what I've read, it's not real stable to mix 500 and 600 cards. I didn't even mix brands in my nutty rig. That may have something to do with your issues.

Just a thought...

nice rig man!

Please post some benchmarks.

I think that without a fan on the back of the boards you can burn your gpus.

You checked the temperature at full throttle?

edit:

soon I will purchase a Tyan barebone and I will fit 8 680s 4GB

Yeah - that looks like a very precarious situation... how are any but the top card getting air?

For you dudes that have money falling out of every orifice and are in a money-no-object situation, isn't the GTX 680 HydroCopper 4gb (or 580 HC 3gb) the one to go with for setups like this?...

Please lmk because I may actually start building a four-card system in a couple months (built upon a MSI Bing Bang II).. but I would likely get one 680 to start and stick in my two 460s until I can get together the dough for a couple more 680s.

Here is the HydroCopper at NewEgg:

I wonder if it would be better to remove the plastic covers in a situation like this and blow some concentrated air at the heat sinks with some improvised ducting. Perhaps even make use of a hair dryer or a 12v car demister fan - something that shifts a decent amount of air anyway. Has anyone tried their own custom cooling solution?

I would advice you to check the cards operation temperature, stacking four card this tight does not look like a healthy solution. From what I can see only the bottom card would get air, the others would have their air intake covered by the card below.
