Congratulation to the winners.
It's been a pleasure for me just to be part of this competition. I've seen some awesome piece of art.
I must say that my favourite image has been Mlody's 'Leukaemia's Diary' image sine i saw it for the first time. Really great IMHO !!!

and congrats to all the deserved winners.
I'd like to express my opinion cause I also participated and would therefore like to ask how this contest was judged?
I thought that jury will put the greatest emphasis on materials and enviromental or HDRI illumination couse it's unbiased. For second analysis there should play the role a composition and selection of enviroment, other elements for a correct assessment modeling and textures was mention. Also render resolution should play a big role.
Just want to say there is a greater selection of good classifiable renders.
So for the next competition Octane team should uncover their rating system.

I understand, in fact, the furry monsters render was my 1st choice...
However there are soo many really good images it gets really tricky.

In the end, the way we judged is:

We give all images to all the judges, for this competition there were 8 people. (radiance, abstrax, enricocerica, philbo, erik, dylan, aaron and craigh)
We let these 8 people pick out the winners for the different prizes.
We then interpolate these 8 picks and find the most picked images.

Unfortunately if you have so many entries, you end up with many different picks, and most of those are equally good, so in the end we just have to decide on which one wins, based on quality, concept, execution, and the amount of work that went into it.

Hope that clears it up.

For next competitions, i might create an online voting system, which would allow the whole community to vote, in a tamper-proof, one-vote per licensed customer system.

I don't understand the 1st price winner. There is some artistic quality in all the rest, humor, story, wow factor, something, while the winner has none, it's just a bunch of stuff in somebody's room. A lot of work done obviously and I probably couldn't make a better one myself. But I've been staring at it a while and to me it actually looks like a photograph shot with a low quality camera and I'd like to see a proof that it actually is a rendered 3d model. If it is a rendering, congrats for the realism and sorry for bitching about this. But still, where is the art?

Hi adiarc ;)
I guess you asked your question to Radiance/Octane Team, but still I couldn't help replying...

Making a scene that you would actually take for a true photograph is IN ITSELF the best thing that one can do.
Not being able to tell whether it's a photograph or not : here's what we're all trying to achieve here.
And this is the biggest challenge.
Of course, people who don't really know about 3D could say "Oh well, photorealistic rendering programs do all the job - that's easy"
But of course this is totally wrong.
There is a good deal of hours spent modelling each item, so it will be detailed enough, and "catch the light" properly, so it can look like a real object.
Then there's a lot of fine-tuning regarding light itself, camera settings, FoV, etc...
This is exactly where technical and artistic skills both meet, in order to create outstanding scenes.

Your asking of proof that it's not a real photograph is - in itself - the best reward that a 3D artist can hope for.
I'm sure Dave will be glad to read your post, actually ! This is a reward in itself !!!

Of course, all this is my own opinion, and I might be wrong of course, but this is how I feel about it...

See ya !
:)

Hi madcoo, :)

I get your point and, like I said, a lot of work was done for sure. And if Dave's intention was to make a boring scene which looks like it was shot with a low quality camera, he absolutely succeeded. But what's the point? What I personally expect of a competition winner is something that makes me go Wow! But maybe that's just me. :?

And I still need that proof, wireframe, something. ;)
