ORBX.js is pure JavaScript/HTML5, and it works on all 5 browsers at up to 1080p60 (with 4k by end of the year).

It may take years, if ever, to get VP9 or H.265 to become universally supported to this degree, since each browser vendor will have to add native code for these video formats to work, and may choose never to do so. Currently, neither Apple nor Microsoft directly support VP8 in their stock browsers, and VP8 has already been out for 3 years.

Shades of VCR format battles....the winner will be who ever has the resources to get it out there. H265 will have traction as a successor because H264 is widely known/deployed. Google will be able to popularise VP9 through their browser and YouTube preeminence. Apple is a minority player with their browser but they will surely want to do something for themselves in regard of a new improved QuickTime. Divx will want to put about something similar. Where does that leave ORBX? Who is producing content that consumers need ORBX for? I don't think it will develop brand recognition or garner enough of a following to win out. I don't think people really want still more formats. Sure ORBX can be a contender for a while but even if it is technically slightly better I don't think its going anywhere. Sorry to say... ;)

But Pix, anything that is completely done in JavaScript (I am a JS programmer,
among other things) will run in any browser. None of the other guys can say
this about their (proprietary) stuff. (from what I have read here)

[Edit: Not all HTML5 goodies - canvas, WebGL (really MS?.. really?) etc are totally
supported by all browers.. so if ORBX doesn't use canvas or webgl, theoretically
is should be g-t-g anywhere.]

And maybe I am wrong, but isn't this more a means to an end?.. it seems Otoy
wants to be able to sell a service that will run apps in the cloud.. so you can
run 3DS Max on an iPad (jesus, why?) or whatever... the video part just makes
it doable... er.. right?

IMO its a niche solution. I don't see it going further than that.

Yes - ORBX supports alpha, z-depth, HDR, and 4:4:4:4 (for lossless type RGBA encoding). We are targeting mid-summer for a first public release.

Hi,
I am new on this forum, for quick presentation, i am Anthony, Software(Engine) Engineer, working with Unigine 3D Engine. I start this Month to work on a cloud version of Unigine. For that i do a simple prototype using X11 offscreen rendering + x264 enncoder + rtp protocol.

Of course it's just a prototype, and the FPS it's slow (20 FPS for Tropics demo : http://unigine.com/products/tropics/).

Some question, in server side, it's possible to try the ORBX format and do you have some performance test from your encoder (do you have any release date/licensing because i am realy curious to do some test).
Other thing in the server side, i use an RTP protocol, if using your tech is possible, in the server side which protocol will be necessary ??

In client side, the decoder are pure javascript, it's not necessary to use some plugin ???
And same question about the protocol, the only two way i know on javascript for network, it's use websocket or webrtc. Do you use this ???

Anyway, the ORBX seems really interesting, and i am impatient for try it and do some test. Hopefully will be possible soon !!!
