Hi
You are right, we did struggle with the sugar. For the final one we went for blenders default geometric cube and used displacement map to get to the illusion of particles on the sugar, also the ambient occlusion as you see adds a little blackness which destroys the fake SSS. Test Resolution was 720P and Sampling is set to 2600. Rendering time roughly 4min per frame. Everything was composited in Blender. The final animation will be rendered at 2K and we may process and grade it for looks.

Do you have any suggestions, we may have another go at it, also if needed I can load the cube geometry somewhere -Rendering time naturally will dictate whether to focus more on the cube or let the animation give the illusion that they are fighting for the cube.

Both Ant and Cube textures are Procedural.
