I've been trying to improve my renders with some hair props, in particular is Olive Hair over at Renderosity. It renders pretty well from Poser, but looks toonish with little detail in Octane. It's not a dynamic hair prop.

For reference:

Trying some things from the new features page:
http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Poser/?page_id=298

Default settings look very toon-ish. Editing the bump texture, boosting the bump strength and the roughness settings helped. In my further attempts to make it look more realistic, I was trying subdivision. I enabled subd (set to 1). Refresh as setting indicates. First tried 1 on sud sharpness, but it seems any setting causes Poser to crash when I open the render Viewport. Item shows as a prop in Poser, subd settings in Poser are unchecked & greyed out.

Hi

It sounds like the hair geometry has some odd geometry which is crashing the subdivision library that Octane uses. It you want the Octane devs to take a look, render a scene with just the hair prop (at subd 0) and export to ORBX and send the file to me. Double check that that scene still crashes by rendering at subd 1 too.

Hair realism is unlikely to be increased with subdivision. It is more a function of the bump and opacity maps, and the roughness setting. In particular, make sure the plugin has picked up the Poser material trans map correctly.

If you post a render here, that would help us provide suggestions, and post a screenshot of the Hair material in Poser and the Octane plugin too.

Thanks

OK, thanks for taking the time to do that. After running what you said, it doesn't blow up on it's own not parented to a figure.

At first, I rendered without any - in Poser, the material maps won't load without a figure (V4) loaded into the scene. It didn't crash with SubD on. Notice the weird lines when I render with SubD on. They don't happen with SubD off.

Here's a few more rendered. Through more renders I think I found better settings, what have you found works well? Last render I did that worked pretty well was Specular .05 and Roughness .1 (not these renders). You'll notice the later render the roughness is default (.7).

Yes, those weird lines would definitely be related to the crash. Are you able to send me the hair OBJ pls? I can then determine if it is an error in the OBJ or the Subdiv library.

I think that hair prop is in general not particularly realistic, and therefore is going to render more toonish than other hair props. Everything looks fine in the Octane material. The main problem is that the hair is flat - so you could Copy either the diffuse or the opacity Image nodes, and Paste into the bump pin.

Hopefully it isn't too simple, it does render pretty well from Poser, so I hope I can render from Octane well.

I sent the orbx files, I see you want the OBJ too. In the middle of a render so I'll wait a bit.

The spikes comes from vertices that are not welded correctly in the 3D model. Pixars SubD do not like that at all while other SubD methods don't care (like Snarly's Subdivider script) and wont crash the app. Both Poser and Octane are using Pixar SubD, so you can check the SubD in Poser before loading it in Octane to see if the object will create spikes.

If you got the skills you can try to located the problems in the figure and fix it in a modeling program. But you will loose the morphs as you will be changing the vertices on the model! If it's a prop there is a weld script Paul has made in the Octane script folder. It might work and weld the prop without problems and then you can SubD it.

To illustrate it. Here is a box where I have unwelded 3 vertices. It means the "points" are not connected to the lines anymore.

And when you SubD it it will look like this. I guess Pixar SubD don't know what to do with the floating points and instead of trying to weld them they just put them in X0, Y0 and Z0 position.

In this test it was a prop. So using Paul's welding script will fix it.
