check your license page in you user account:
http://render.otoy.com/account/octanelive.php

(1)
you should see at least one entry here - this is the OctaneRender main (aka "Standalone") license
please note that you need to have at least one main license in order to use the plugin!

(2)
again, at least one entry needs to be here - this is the Plugin license

... one of each of them needs to be activated on one single machine!
please note: for technical reasons, this usually means within the same operating system on that machine!

if you haven't yet installed and/or activated the Standalone on your machine/os, the Activation Manager, which will start right after the Installer has successfully completed, will care to activate both needed licenses. if you don't plan to use the Standalone, you don't need to install it before installing the Plugin.

if you need to deactivate the Standalone and/or the Plugin, in order to transfer one or both licenses to another machine/os, the easiest way is to deactivate them from the OctaneLive accounts page (written on top of this post).
please note, that you need to wait 1 hour, until a deactivated license can be activated again - you will get some info about how long it will last if you try to activate before this time span ends.

if you are missing a license you have bought, please contact the OTOY support:
[email protected]

if you have other problems during this process, feel free to post here or send me a pm.
