If the problem comes from the MTL file containing duplicate entries we can fix this issue. Does the MTL file contains multiple newmtl commands with exactly the same name? If so delete the MTL file before importing the OBJ. Octane will create just one material input pin for any material name present in the OBJ file.

Rhino 4 creates material duplicates in the mtl file. Rhino 5 does not. For me this is a bug.
Rhino and Octane would be the perfect match. I agree.
I am not sure why they don't push the Rhino development. Is it the relation with Autodesk? Don't they understand the demand and growth of the Rhino user group? No developers around?
VRay, Maxwell, Arion for Rhino but no integrated Octane plugin. Yes it is a shame, but I am sure that they will put more attention to this soon.
The best thing you can do is find developers and link them with Otoy.

Hi Refracty! At least you understand me and don´t try to make cheap nonsens talking, like many other developers do. I really respect and apreciate this. You are right, it is a shame and should be fixed soon. I dont know developers, i dont know how to script. i bought rhino and had 1 week school and now i design for 2 years. I know rhino pretty good and can design really anything i have in my fantasie. But at least i am a customer and no specialist - i dont know how to fix this n that...i just wanna work like i was used to be. I have no Idea of Programming or editing files - i feel like a hero, cause i was able to intsall a plugin - you know :-). so sorry, i dont know any developers - just jewelers or goldsmith´s :-). you guys are the specialists - you know what a mtl file is, how it works and how octane reads formats - not me :-). please fix it - soon!

Hello Reoland. Thanks you also for replying! I don´t know how the mtl looks like. i opened it in a text editor but for me thats just - ok..to be honest, i dont understand this all. i am used to press a button, set the grade of detail i wanna have - let the programm start and start to assign materials. like this i wanna work in octane. i dont know why others can and octane team not, but its a bit frustrating for me at the moment. i have 26 days left to use rhino 5 and then we will see. at the moment my workflow is - open 3dm in rhino 5, export as an obj, open in standalone and assign materials. i just wish i could do this direct out of rhino 4 sr9. i don´t get it - sorry. If others can do it, it should be possible here too. just my thinking. as i said - i dont know how "octane" thinks - works - i just know, it can not make me earn money like other renders can. the problem is - the other renders are crap, octane is holy shit great....so.....you see, i am really in a problem situation haha :-)

Kind regards - Chris!

Chris,
I am a user like you and started 12 years ago with Rhino.
It is a great tool and I am happy to publish Rhino articles from time to time in the digital production magazine (germany).
The next article will be published on christmas and shows the new features of Rhino5.

if i understand you right you mean i have to make of each nurbs objekt a poly mesh, join it, take care that it is on the right layer and group/mesh all objekts which are on one layer, then export to obj. i tried that but it is a lot of work. it worked but....how can a businessguy who has to make about 5 to 10 designs and renderings a day work like that? at least this works now but i am sure there must be a beter workflow. i am looking for a workflow like in keyshot. klick, apply material, done! this is how it should be. it is a programm to do business with - not a hobby play program :-) thats why i bought it :-) Its Christmas time and i have a lot of work.....thank god!

@jitendra: also - thank you very much for your help. i tried it and it worked. my problem is - when i export obj and mtl file, it gives every gemstone an individial material name. so if i have 23 stones - material 1, material 2, material 3 and so one. this piece hat 48 gemstones. each stone has 4 prongs. you can calculate how many different parts i have in OBJ. about 400 :-P. apply to each part a material is HORROR. so the mtl converter does not delete the material and sort it, cause he thinks i have all unique materials and i dont know how to export in OBJ that the mtl files writes: YellowGold, Platin, Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Iron .....aaaaaaaand done. you know what i mean?

@refracty: to be honest i am a little bit sad, that one of the octane render team tells me.....ok you bought octane.....but now please buy another program just do do the quick export. so...ummmm....i dont know how to react on that. just buy rhino 5, a few 100 bucks again, just to export? i don´t know if thats a good idea! anyway i downloaded now the trial from the mc neel site and give it a try. could you please post a picture here of the exact OBJ export settings in rhino 5? i have absolutely no experience in rhino 5 so far. i just do this, cause i like octane so much. please make a picture of what i should check and what not and i give it a try then.

Thank you all for your help - i really appreciate it. Thank you very much!

Kind regards Chris!

When you export from octane.. make sure you have ONLY simple basic materials applied to each object geometry group.
IF you have block instance, i recommend to explode them first and make them poly surfaces.. now, group all such poly surfaces based on material type and then apply simple rhino material.
this will create off course a big mtl file if you export from rhino... but you can use the link i pasted above to eliminate the duplicates. once done, import the obj in octane and its exactly as you needed.
J
