I was also curious about this as the elephant in the room now is - in what respect will OctaneRender be inferior/superior to iRay and Octane use an almost 100% similar approach to rendering things in the GPU.

Out-of-core-rendering is supported as well.
We're already working on a dedicated shader solution for iRay :)

Well, it was more the point, the daz is obviously free, and who will want to spend 300 euros on octane when it more or less does the same thing.
In my initial tests and renders, it stands out quite well,
And as for developing eye iRay shaders (yes your right is quite easy to do) as it's a standard

The way the daz octane beta is at the moment. I would pretty much say that this has killed it

Here's a quick iRay render (not my work. By the way)

Yeah - definitely right about that.
The big "selling" point DAZ has now, is, that it's entirely free, and almost does the same thing in exactly the same way.

Wondering what t_3 will have to say about this...

All in all an understandable move by DAZ3D, but also pretty selfish when thinking about t_3 and all the hard work he has put in the plug-in.

I've no idea what T3 will say about this has any one heard from in a while?

Pretty selfish mmmm well, yes and no, because if you think of the bigger picture
As you said , there's a market as we both known for a while in the shaders

So rereleased content will pocket, then quite a bit of revenue.
Selfish yes (but in business, you never get anywhere by be nice)

here you go side by side render with default settings octane on the left iray on the right

Well damn, there you go. I can't decide wheteher I should be happy or annoyed by this, with the money I've already sunk into Octane :/
How does the shaders/materials work? Is it just straight up DAZ materials, or is it seperate like Octane?

From the DAZ forums:
What about existing shader products... do they work with this new render engine? For example amazing skins.
Shaders are render engine specific. With those shaders that could be translated. we did our best, but most can not.

Note you can still use 3Delight, and in fact this beta does include a new build of 3Delight as well. :)
So seperate shaders like Octane. Fine my me, I always found the DAZ shader system almost impossible to work with. Probably because it's not an unbiased shader, and it needs all kinds og weird littel workarounds.

Yeah, but with the new rendering-engine they're also introducing unbiased features like other engines in that field are having it.
We're pretty confident, that the RedSpec shaders will work well in that environment.

Ha, I bet a lot of people are struggling with the same conflict, or soon will be once DAZ starts really promoting it. Personally, I'm overjoyed. I've spent just a few hours with it, and it is phenomenal. Hemulen, you were part of a conversation I had here just a day or two ago where we were trying to get the most out of our custom Octane skin shaders. Well... In the new DAZ beta, look for the Iray Optimized Genesis 2 Female MAT in the Content Library under "People-Genesis2Female-Materials-Iray". It's by far the best skin shader for a DAZ character I've ever seen, leaping way past what I and others have been struggling to cobble together over months of work with Octane. It's a beautiful shader with architecture designed specifically to make great and realistic looking skin using DAZ texture maps. And the renderer is so well integrated into DAZ... wow.

Also in the content library, look at "Shader Presets-Iray Uber Defaults". Very realistic presets for metal, rubber, plastic, glass... and this is just the tip of the iceberg - I can't wait to see what happens when users and content creators jump off from this starting point to make their own Iray shaders. This is very exciting for anyone who uses DAZ. TRRazor, I'm looking forward to seeing what contributions you make to the new generation of DAZ shaders. It's going to be a trick to improve upon the "Iray Optimized Genesis 2 Female MAT" skin shader that already ships free with the beta! Further development along the lines of your wet skin shader would probably be a good direction though. DAZ seems to have the need for basic skin realism pretty well satisfied for the near future.
