GPUBox Artist - Virtualization of the GPU devices
hehe, seen this for a while =)

& here's some good message from RS developer to all Octaners:
new addition, tweet from Renegatt Software @RenegattSoft :
On our blog we wrote a few words about the next steps that we are going to take: http://bit.ly/1sHHt82

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
And what does Otoy have to say to this one?

They haven't say anything bad just yet..00Ghz wrote:And what does Otoy have to say to this one?
as this solution doesn't touch them, directly.
However if You virtualise GPU's You can technically circumvent 12GPU limit (& don't need extra licences, though spending money for virtualisation software - sorta the same as putting extra tu buy better motherboard)..
but if they change their licensing policy these new licences "might be bricked" (had a conversation in twitter earlier) as by EULA You agree to use software with no more than "predefined" number of GPUs..- so.. even if You virtualise 20+ GPUs to add to Your existing few..You'll might end up using just a part of them before getting licence that cost more (that's only my speculations, but it would be nice to hear theirs =)
anyway, OCE is common, new licence types are coming, so let's wait a bit & see =)
OTOY "Any sort of shimming or virtualizing GPUs is a no-go"
even under 12 GPU..(sort of understandable as they might be loosing sales)
So I would just guess, we need to wait until OCE & see what it brings =)

I'm sure there's a reason, but I just don't get why OTOY would add network rendering support, but not release render node licensing, then cap total GPUs at 12, and put that into the actual EULA and brick you're license for trying it. For those of us who are trying not to assume that it's a selfish move to protect/promote use of their upcoming Cloud Edition, it's a real head scratcher why this sounded like a good idea.
Octane Cloud Edition will eventually launch—I assume, it was announced almost 18 months ago—and the licensing will change to...something. So, we'll wait and see of course. Still...

I just went to the website and wanted to play with the demo under Windows 7 and found a 50 page manual, and...

If anyone of you could run it under windows and give a really short list of what to do I would be grateful.

The server doesnt run in Windows, only the client setup does.... which handles the GPU tasking to the linux serversmicha wrote:j7th wrote:http://www.renegatt.com/products.php

I set up a Linux box to use as a server machine, but just cant get things to work ( at all ) even following the rather good manual, I got nowhere after a few days, I didnt think it was going to require a course in programming before using, which is a pity.
Sure for tech artists out there, or system admins its a doddle to setup, but unless you know Linux ( work somewhere that uses it or know someone who does ) GPUBox is a no go currently.

there are plans for a windows/osx version down the road, but with most software atm its all about the cloud/AWS version
