Yeah, the res is pretty high, 30", 2560 x 1600, but that should not steal 3 GB ram, right?

You can find out how much memory is being used by the system with the Nvidia settings tool. I use Linux so I don't know what it's called in Windows. This is also might be affected by other programs currently running that use vram as well. For example if I run 3D-Coat and have a large voxel object that I'm working on my vram usage will balloon up to over a Gbyte. If I include my 460 in a Octane render my 980 would look like it had only 800 MBytes of memory. :D Octane always uses the smallest GPU memory as the amount of free vram that it has available.
Linux Mint 20 x64 | Nvidia GTX 980 4GB (displays) RTX 2070 8GB| Intel I7 5820K 3.8 Ghz | 32Gb Memory | Nvidia Driver 460.56

Disable SLI / Multi-GPU in the NVIDIA control panel. You often see extra memory usage like this when it's enabled.

Darn! You beat me too it! I just found out as well, it did the trick! (it is funny that the tick box says "disable multi gpu" though... )

Thank you so much!

This setting will probably not matter. I would leave it at the default.

The setting you need to make sure is off, is this one:
